Barbara Loden (born July 8, 1932 or 1934 in Marion , North Carolina , † September 5, 1980 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress , screenwriter and director .

Life

Barbara Loden, born in either 1932 or 1934 according to various sources, first worked as a model and dancer in the late 1940s before the blonde turned to acting and became a member of the renowned Actors Studio in New York. Her first notable role was in 1956 in the television show of comedian Ernie Kovacs . She made her film debut in 1960 in the supporting role as secretary of Montgomery Clift in Wilder Strom (1960) directed by Elia Kazan . The following year, Elia Kazan gave her a slightly larger role in Fever in the Blood , where she played the sister of Warren Beatty's character. In 1964 she premiered on Broadway in Arthur Miller's play After the Fall , directed by Kazan, and won a Tony Award for her performance . In 1967 she married Kazan and had a son named Leo with him. From an earlier marriage in the 1950s with the television producer Laurence Joachim († 2013), Loden had another son, the folk singer Marco Joachim.

After her marriage to Kazan, Loden largely retired from acting, but instead developed plans to work as a director herself. The result was the socially critical film Wanda in 1970 , in which she acted as a screenwriter, director and leading actress. Wanda , which was shot for just over 100,000 US dollars , won the Pasinetti Prize for best foreign film at the Venice Film Festival , is now a classic and was included in the National Film Registry in 2017 . After Wanda , she was often celebrated as the female counterpart to John Cassavetes in American cinema, but she was only able to realize two short films in 1975. She mainly taught drama students in the 1970s and directed theater productions on off-Broadway . However, she continued to write scripts and had ideas for new films. In the late 1970s, she began work on a film adaptation of Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening , but was unable to realize it before her death.

In 1978 Barbara Loden was diagnosed with breast cancer, of which she died two years later. At the time of her death, she was separated from Kazan, but the ongoing divorce had been delayed because of her cancer.
