Josef Adamiak (born September 24, 1932 in Zduńska Wola , Poland , † May 1, 2014 ) was a German photographer and art historian .

Life

Josef Adamiak was born the son of a weaver. In the 1930s, the father completed retraining as a railroad worker. During this time the family moved to Thuringia , where he attended elementary school. In 1941 the family moved back to Zdunska Wola. Fleeing to the west from the advancing Red Army , they reached Rostock . Adamiak completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter there. He then went to the Workers and Farmers Faculty (ABF) in Dresden and, after successfully completing his degree, studied art history and archeology in Rostock and Berlin . For about two years he found a job as an assistant with a teaching position at the Dresden University of Fine Arts . He then moved to Seemann-Verlag Leipzig , where he worked as a lecturer for the history of architecture and wrote a number of practical art and architecture-historical publications himself. He took most of the photographs himself. Adamiak worked for the publisher (most recently on a fee basis) until he retired.

In the years 1983–1996, the Deutsche Fotothek department of the SLUB Dresden acquired around 830 photographs from the field of architecture and sculpture, with a focus on castles and palaces . At the time of acquisition in 1983 due to the travel restrictions in the GDR, the more than 250 photos of Pompeii that were used for the Pompeii publication were of particular importance . Experienced ancient world of Hans Eschebach originated. Together with the author, Josef Adamiak was able to travel to the ruined city as a photographer on behalf of his publishing house and take the necessary photos together with the author.

Above all, it is the photographs of the castles and mansions in Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg that show a condition that is no longer to be found in any case. His work is therefore an invaluable resource in terms of monument preservation as well as art historical aspects.
