Eugene Hartzell

Eugene Hartzell (born May 21, 1932 in Cincinnati / Ohio , † April 20, 2000 in Vienna ) was an American composer .

Hartzell studied composition , music theory , music history , piano and singing at Kent State University from 1949 to 1953 and from 1953 to 1955 at the School of Music at Yale University , and from 1956 to 1958 composition with Hans Erich Apostel . From 1958 to 1960 he did his military service as pianist and drummer of the 7th US Army Symphony Orchestra in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1960 he lived as a composer in Vienna, where he also worked as a speaker and editor for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation from 1974 . In 1987 he founded the Wiener Collage ensemble with Erik Freitag and René Staar . In 1999 he was awarded the Music Prize of the City of Vienna and honorary membership of the Austrian Composers' Association.

In addition to a symphony for strings, a symphony for wind quintet and strings and a synopsis of a symphony, Hartzell composed numerous works for chamber music and for solo instruments, psalm settings , madrigals , choirs and songs .
