George M. Anathil

George Marian Anathil SVD (born June 28, 1932 in Athirampuzha , Kerala , India , † May 2, 2009 in Indore , Madhya Pradesh , India) was Bishop of Indore .

Life

Anathil joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries in 1951 . He studied philosophy in Indore and theology in Pune . On October 2, 1959, he was ordained a priest . Then he worked for his order. In 1965 he became the Pontifical Athenaeum Poona with a thesis on the origin of the clergy in India doctorate . From 1966 to 1973 he was prefect in the seminary , then rector of the Minor Seminary of the Salesians in Palda.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Indore on December 18, 1972 . He was ordained episcopate on June 29, 1973 by the Archbishop of Bhopal , Eugene Louis D'Souza MSFS ; Co- consecrators were Mar Antony Padiyara , Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and later Cardinal, and Leobard D'Souza , Bishop of Jabalpur .

He established numerous new mission stations and parishes . The dioceses of Khandwa and Jhabua were founded on his initiative . He was involved in the Indian Bishops' Conference (CBCI), especially in public relations. In 2006 he was honored with the Sadbhavana Prize for his interreligious dialogue and his commitment to education, health and social issues. He was the initiator of the beatification process of Sister Clarissa Maria Rani.

On October 24, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
