George Whitfield Andrews

George Whitfield Andrews (born January 19, 1861 in Wayne / Ohio ; † August 18, 1932 in Honolulu / Hawaii ) was an American composer , organist and music teacher .

Andrews came to Oberlin with his parents at the age of six and attended the Oberlin Conservatory from 1869 to 1879 , where Fenelon Bird Rice was one of his teachers. On trips to Leipzig, Munich and Paris (1884–86 and 1989–99) he continued his education and took a. a. Lessons from Joseph Rheinberger and Alexandre Guilmant .

In 1882 he began to teach organ at the Oberlin Conservatory, and from 1886 he also taught composition. From 1892 to 1931 he was a professor of organ and composition. He was known as an excellent concert organist and was a founding member of the American Guild of Organists .

In addition to his work as an organist at the Second Church in Obelin, he was director of the Conservatory Orchestra for twenty years and director of the Musical Union for forty years , with which he a. a. Performed works by César Franck and Edward Elgar . Oberlin College honored him with a master’s degree (1900) and an honorary doctorate (1903).
