John Barnes Chance
John Barnes Chance (born November 20, 1932 in Beaumont , Texas , † August 16, 1972 in Lexington , Kentucky ) was an American composer .
He graduated from the University of Texas with a Master of Music degree and then took up additional studies with Kent Kennan , Clifton Williams and Paul Pisk . He was able to deepen his compositional knowledge by playing the timpani in the Austin Symphony Orchestra and as arranger for the 4th and 8th US Army bands. A scholarship enabled him to work as a freelance composer in Greensboro , North Carolina , from 1960 to 1962 .
Chance wrote works for various orchestral and chamber music ensembles as well as vocal music. In 1966 he won the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award of the American Bandmasters Association for his piece Variations on a Korean Folk Song , which is now one of the standard works for wind orchestras .
