Paul Amadeus Pisk
Paul Amadeus Pisk (born May 16, 1893 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † January 12, 1990 in Los Angeles ) was an Austrian- American musicologist and composer.
Life
Paul Pisk received his doctorate in musicology from the University of Vienna in 1916 with Guido Adler . He then studied at the Vienna Conservatory and took composition lessons with Arnold Schönberg and Franz Schreker . He then taught at the Vienna Conservatory and also gave lectures at various Viennese adult education centers, in particular at the Volksheim Ottakring adult education center , where he worked with Kurt Pahlen as a music consultant from 1932 to 1934 . Among his students was Leopold Spinner . From the 1920s he was a member of a Viennese lodge of the Austrian Droit Humain .
He was also a board member, secretary and pianist in the Association for Private Musical Performances . He was one of the founding members of the International Society for Contemporary Music and from 1920 to 1928 was co-editor of the Musikblätter des Anbruch and music editor of the Arbeiter-Zeitung . In the 1930s he founded the concert series Musik der Gegenwart in Vienna, which was continued by Friedrich Wildgans from 1936 to 1938 .
As a Jew, he emigrated to the USA in 1936. Here he taught a. a. at the University of Redlands , California, (1937–1951), the University of Texas at Austin (1951–1963) and Washington University in St. Louis (1963–1972). Pisk composed orchestral works, ballets, chamber music and songs and wrote works on music theory.
