life and work

Giulio del Torre came from Romans d'Isonzo in the county of Gorizia . As the son of the doctor Camillo, he was born into a wealthy family. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Karl von Blaas , later in Rome and Venice . He then lived in Turin , where he had a son, and in Gradisca d'Isonzo . In 1932 he died in his hometown at the age of 75.

Torre's work is mainly devoted to genre scenes and portraits depicting life in northern Italy . His street depictions of children in ragged clothes, including the match seller existing in several versions, are particularly well known . His compositions are determined by an earthy color palette with shades of blue and gray, a specialty is the high level of detail that enlivens his nostalgic compositions. The artist's first exhibition took place in Gorizia in 1888 . Many of his pictures are now kept in European museums.
