Katzengraben-Presse is a bibliophile German-language publisher based in Berlin-Köpenick .

Publishing history

The publishing house was founded by typesetter and graphic artist Christian Ewald (born November 30, 1949 in Weimar ); initially with Ralf Liersch as a partner, who was responsible for the bookbinding. The first book that was published by the publisher was also the last book in the GDR : East Berlin Staircase Talks by Jan Silberschuh. It was issued in an edition of 999 pieces and delivered on October 2, 1990 at 11:59 p.m. With the German reunification on October 3, 1990the existence of the GDR ended. Since then, the Katzengraben-Presse has published two limited editions each year - in spring and in autumn (999 copies each, the first 99 of them as a special edition). Since 1990 the unique editions have been published at regular intervals in an edition of 14 copies, graphically elaborate and handwritten book editions. In 2013, the publishing house was awarded the Victor Otto Stomps Prize of the City of Mainz at the Mainz Minipressen-Messe for excellent work related to the beautiful book .

  • 1990: Prize of the " Stiftung Buchkunst " for East Berlin Staircase Talks as "one of the most beautiful German books 1990".
  • 1992: The Zeppelin edition by Heinrich Eduard Jacob was named “one of the 20 most beautiful books in the world” on the occasion of the “Premio Internazionale Felice Feliciano” (Per la storia, l'arte e la qualita del libro) in Verona (1991–1992) awarded the 3rd prize (Terzo edizione).
  • 1995: Main prize in the "Faber-Castell cartoon competition".
  • 2011: Winning the competition of the Anna Amalia Library Weimar with Goethe in Ehringsdorf
  • 2013: Victor Otto Stomps Prize of the State Capital Mainz (main prize)
  • 2013: Winner of the competition of the Anna Amalia Library Weimar with Shakespeare's suitcase
