action
In northern England, the young woman Mona lives with her brother in an old pub, the "Swan". Mona is a typical English working class girl. Her brother Phil is an ex-convict who found his faith after prison and joined a group of “born-again Christians”. In the middle of summer Mona meets the girl Tamsin from the rich upper class. Although the two come from completely different worlds, they are immediately fascinated by each other and get closer and closer. Together they experience an exciting summer full of passion, leisure and love. But while Mona feels sincere, for Tamsin everything is just a kind of game that is inevitably heading for a painful end.
Synopsis
"My Summer of Love" is usually referred to as a coming-of-age film and is incorrectly reduced to the homoerotic component. However, this means that the film is shown drastically shortened. The real theme of the film is playing with identities. The question is when you can believe a person, which statements are true, what is pretend? Tamsin seduces Mona by pretending to be someone else and presenting her life differently than it really is. Mona can escape her boring and bleak life through the relationship with Tamsin, but Tamsin also enjoys leading another exciting life that she could not lead without Mona. A life away from your own broken family. A life inspired by Mona's simple, direct and honest way. Phil, Mona's brother, has not found what he really is either. He lives in his own world with God.
At the end of the film, the masks fall and the real people reveal themselves behind the pretenses. Phil falls back into his old behavior and gives up his religion. Tamsin's structure of lies collapses and Mona is left deeply injured. Summer is over - the future remains open.
Trivia
