occupation

The sword of the red giant (original title: I giganti di Tessaglia ) is an Italian-produced fantasy film with elements of the Jason and the Odysseus saga, which Riccardo Freda directed in 1960, but which later distanced himself from it. In the German-speaking world, the film did not open until years later, on March 6, 1964.

action

Jason and Orpheus, King of Thessaly , travel to Colchis on the ship Argo in search of the Golden Fleece . After surviving a severe storm, Jason has to deal with a human flesh-loving monster on a small island. Meanwhile, his wife Creusa has to fight back at home from the not only power-hungry Adrastus, who wants to occupy the throne.

Meanwhile, the Argonauts land on another island ruled by women under the leadership of Gaia, who, however, turn all men into goats. Jason outwits the women. After arriving in Colchis, he can take the Golden Fleece with him and arrive in Thessaly in time to uncover the evil plot of Adrastus. He and his people can free Creusa right at the altar, although Orpheus is fatally wounded.

criticism

The Monthly Film Bulletin sums it up: “The screenplay bears little resemblance to the saga, instead it puts together a series of action-oriented events, locations and characters that […] have less consistency than the comic strip formula it is based on Thanks to inspiration. ”The film's lexicon also gave a negative assessment:“ Instead of adventurous entertainment, the film spreads a fairground atmosphere. ”

Remarks

The film's soundtrack was released in full by Digitmovies .
