Basil Khalil

Timothy Basil Khalil (born August 31, 1981 in Nazareth ) is a Palestinian filmmaker.

Life

Khalil was the first of four children to a Palestinian Protestant pastor and a British woman born in Nazareth, where he also grew up. As a child of Protestant Christians, he attended a Christian school.

He left Israel when he was 18 years old. In Canada he earned a diploma in television production and gained his first film experience with the Divine Intervention - A Chronicle of Love and Pain by Elia Suleiman , published in 2002 , on which he worked as second assistant director. Khalil studied film production and script development at the Screen Academy Scotland from 2002 to 2005. In 2005 he founded his production company Code 81 Films, with whom he produced his debut feature film, Replay Revenge , shortly after completing his studies . As a result, short documentaries and feature films were made. He has also worked in London as a freelance producer for television, including the BBC .

In 2015 his short film Ave Maria was released , for which he not only directed, but also wrote the script and worked as an editor. The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in May 2015 and was screened in the competition for the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film . In early 2016, the comedy, which describes the meeting of a Jewish settler family and a group of Palestinian Carmelite nuns who have taken a vow of silence, was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Short Film.

Khalil lives and works in London.
