Bear Story is a Chilean computer-animated short film by Gabriel Osorio from the year 2014 .

action

An old bear builds figures for a mechanical diorama until morning . In addition to a father bear, he also built a mother bear and a baby bear out of sheet metal. With the figures of mother and child, he goes into an adjoining room, which turns out to be an abandoned children's room. Pictures on the wall are evidence of a happy family life. Then the bear has breakfast, packs the figures and moves into the city center with a diorama box, where a young bear soon appears and gives money for the demonstration. The bear begins to set the diorama in motion.

It tells the story of a happy bear family. One day a circus opens near the settlement and the circus captors pour out and capture numerous animals from the area to display in the circus. Among the prisoners is the father bear, who is separated from his family. He has an unhappy time in the circus, has to cycle, juggle or fly through the air on a bike. Only the photo of his family on the inside of a pocket watch gives him hope. One day the bear manages to escape because he shoots through the big top while jumping on the bike. He escapes his pursuers and reaches his old settlement. Here he finds everything devastated, but his wife and child survived. Happy they embrace each other.

The show is over and the bear cub is impressed. He gives the bear the money for the performance and leaves. The bear stays behind and, after a quick look at the family photo in his pocket watch, begins to recruit customers for his diorama presentation.

production

Bear Story was the first animated film directed by Gabriel Osorio. He produced the film with his own production company Punkrobot, with which up until then he had realized projects for children's television and commercials. Osorio drew the inspiration for his film from the story of his grandfather Leopold Osorio, who was arrested in 1973 during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and fled to England after two years without being able to see his family again. Osorio processed the absence of his grandfather, who stayed in England for ten years, in the film. He chose the bear figure because he found his grandfather to be of imposing stature.

The work on Bear Story took two years to complete and spanned a total of five years with interruptions; Antonia Herrera was in charge of animation. The film was created entirely on the computer, with 2D and 3D animation being combined. The film does not contain any dialogues.

Bear Story premiered at the Festival d'Animation Annecy in June 2014 and subsequently screened at numerous festivals, including the 2014 London Film Festival and the Ottawa International Animation Festival , and the 2015 Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Dresden Film Festival and in January 2016 at the Tromsø Internasjonale film festival .

The film received the jury award for Best Animated Short Film at the RiverRun International Film Festival in 2015 and also won the Audience Award at the Washington DC Independent Film Festival in 2015.
