Frank D. Gilroy

Frank Daniel Gilroy (* 13. October 1925 in New York City , New York ; † 12. September 2015 in Monroe , New York) was an American playwright , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Growing up in upstate New York , Frank Daniel Gilroy attended Dartmouth College and graduated from Yale School of Drama . He then made a name for himself as a playwright and screenwriter. His greatest success was his first Broadway play , The Subject Was Roses , in 1964 , which earned him a Tony Award , a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize . A successful and award-winning film adaptation (with Martin Sheen, among others ) followed four years later. In total, Gilroy wrote more than 30 plays. For his screenplay for Desperate People , he received the Silver Bear at the 1971 Berlinale .

The three sons Tony , John and Dan , who are also active in the film business, come from his marriage to his wife Ruth . The latter is married to the actress Rene Russo .
