action

During her first mission in Afghanistan, the young woman Feda becomes part of a task force that is supposed to arrest a bomber. During the 10-kilometer march in the mountainous region, she reaches her limits. When she was doing her business during a break, a motorcycle passed the group. A detonation occurs, but no one is injured.

They finally find the suspect in the village. In the scuffle, his pregnant wife falls, and the amniotic sac bursts. Feda examines her and discovers that the unborn child's arm is already sticking out. It has no pulse, so the present Dr. Nasir recommends cutting out the baby, otherwise the mother's life will be in danger. Just before Feda starts to cut, the child moves. They give birth, but the mother dies shortly afterwards from her heavy bleeding. The alleged assassin is then arrested. He hands the child over to Feda with the request that he take good care of it.

criticism

Jennie Kermode of Eye for Film describes Day One as "an intense, visceral film with unused performances from the leading actors". The political positioning of the film, which portrays the Americans as heroes, while the Afghans would take on all the suffering, was sometimes criticized. Alizada would defuse this somewhat in the role of Feda and leave room for doubt. Regardless of the political aspect, Day One is an "impressively well-made film".

Awards

In addition to an Oscar nomination, the film received two Emmys at the 2015 College Television Awards, one the Directing Award (Special Juried Award) and the other first prize for best drama. He also received the LA Student Film Award at the British Academy Film Awards 2015 and competed for the Golden Tadpole in the Student Etudes Competition at the 2015 Camerimage . [...] Alizada's performance goes some way towards resolving the problem, making room for doubt; and regardless of the political aspect, this is still an impressively well made film. "
