Earned It , also known as Earned It (Fifty Shades of Gray) , is a song by contemporary R&B singer The Weeknd . It is the theme song of the film Fifty Shades of Gray and appeared both as a single , on the soundtrack for the film and on The Weeknd's second album Beauty Behind the Madness .

The single reached numerous placements in charts around the world. In the Billboard charts , it marked the first top 5 single for The Weeknd at number 3 and was awarded five times platinum . The song was also nominated for Best Song at the 2016 Academy Awards.

background

The soundtrack for Fifty Shades of Gray was conceived two years before the film was completed. Certain artists were approached relatively early, including The Weeknd, who showed great interest and conceived a whole series of songs for different scenes. Earned It and Where You Belong were ultimately the only ones used for the soundtrack. However, Earned It appears as the only song twice in the film. The video for the song was released on January 21, 2014 via YouTube and Vevo . It was shot at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles by Sam Taylor-Johnson , the director of the film . The music video dispenses with the use of scenes from the film, which had not yet appeared at the time the video was released, but shows an exclusive bondage scene with actress Dakota Johnson . The Weeknd sings on a stage with a number of go-go dancers .

success

Like the film, the soundtrack is a great success for everyone involved. In particular, Earned It as the first single from the soundtrack was a huge success. It is the first big hit for the R&B singer, who first reached the top 5 on the US Billboard charts with this single. Not only did The Weeknd's single mark a huge hit for the movie soundtrack, Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do also achieved the same spot on the US charts.

Earned It won the Grammy for Best R&B Song at the 2016 Grammy Awards . It was also nominated for an Oscar for best movie song, but was subject to Sam Smith's Writing’s on the Wall from James Bond 007: Specter .
