The Meyer Lemon ( Citrus × Meyeri , Citrus × limon 'meyeri' or Citrus × jambhiri 'Meyer') is one of China originated Citrus whose emergence on a naturally formed Hybrid / cross between a lemon and orange or tangerine is returned.

Botanical history

The Meyer lemon was found in Beijing / China in 1908 by the American plant explorer Frank Nicholas Meyer (1875–1918) who was working on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture (after whom it was later named) and brought to the USA .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The Meyer lemon forms small trees that reach heights of 2 to 4 meters. The elongated oval, slightly pointed leaves are dark green and shiny.

Generative characteristics

The two main blooming times are in spring and autumn. The hermaphrodite flowers are fragrant.

The fruits are oval with a thin, soft, dark yellow to light orange skin over a white mesocarp that surrounds a very juicy "pulp" made up of juice sacs . The yellow to orange pulp has a sour taste, but is less sour than other commercially available lemons.

Occurrence and use

The Meyer lemon is used in gardens in the southern states of the USA and Australia . The Meyer lemon tolerates areas with occasional, light frost . It is also suitable as a container plant .

The fruits are used like those of other lemons. Due to the thin and soft skin, the transportability and processing ability of the fruit of the Meyer lemon is limited, which is why the fruits are hardly traded or not industrially processed.

Use as food

Due to the sweeter / less sour taste than other commercially available lemons and its aroma, the Meyer lemon is often referred to as the best lemon variety.

The Meyer lemon has become known in the USA since Martha Stewart used it in her recipes.

Improved Meyer Lemon

In the 1950s, plant specimens were found that are not carriers of the Citrus Tristeza virus and are cultivated as "improved Meyer lemon" ( Citrus × meyeri 'Improved' or Citrus × jambhiri 'Improved Meyer').
