Martín Abarca de Bolea y Castro

Martín Abarca de Bolea y Castro , Count (Conde) of Las Almunias, Baron of Torres, Clamosa, Siétano and Rodellar, was a Spanish poet and writer living in the second half of the 16th century .

He came from a noble family of Aragon . His father, Bernardo, was the Spanish Vice Chancellor under Charles V and Philip II ; his mother was Doña Gerónima de Castro y de Pinós. Martín Abarca himself distinguished himself in Spanish military service towards the end of the 16th century and was known for his love of literature and his knowledge of numismatics . His only prose work, Historia de las grandezas y de las cosas maravillosas de las Provincias Orientales , is a translation of a Latin version of Marco Polo's travelogue Il Milione and was printed in Saragossa in 1601 . He also wrote the poems Las lágrimas de San Pedro ( Lérida , 1578), Los Poemas de las Amazonas (unprinted) and Libro de Orlando determinado (1578). He is mentioned very highly by Lope de Vega in his Laurel de Apolo .
