Chau, Beyond the Lines (AKA: War Within the Walls ) is an American documentary short film made in 2015 by Courtney Marsh . The film deals with the late effects of Agent Orange's deployment in the Vietnam War using the example of a teenager . In addition to being honored with several film prizes , she was also nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the 2016 Academy Awards .
production
The production and shooting of the film ran over a period of about eight years in order to be able to depict the development of the protagonist. Originally, Courtney Marsh, together with her classmates at the time, planned to document the street children in Ho Chi Minh City - however, the group was then introduced to the care home for victims of the Agent Orange long-term effects, in which Marsh immediately began to volunteer . After the residents had agreed to the filming, their idea for War Within the Walls developed .
"I focused on Chau's story because of the relentless pursuit for his dream to be an artist. He taught me to hope in a world where, most often than not, there is a lack of such. If we could all look at the larger picture, focus on what we have rather than what we don't have, perhaps our seemingly impossible dreams would be actually within our reach. "
“I focused on Chau's story because of his relentless pursuit of the dream of becoming an artist. He taught me hope in a world where there is often rather than seldom a shortage of just that. If we all looked at the bigger picture, focused on what we have rather than what we don't, then maybe all of our seemingly impossible dreams would actually be within reach. "
action
Le Minh Chau was born in Đồng Nai in 1991 and has malformations caused by the dioxin in Agent Orange that his mother unwittingly ingested while drinking from a contaminated river. Chau is shown from the age of 17. Since his family cannot look after him, he lives in a care home for dioxin victims.
Chau discovered a passion for drawing early on in his life , but his contacts advised him to refrain from his dream of working as an artist and fashion designer, as he would not be physically capable of doing it - Chau's arms are deformed. However, Chau becomes self-employed and at the end of the production period lives in his own apartment as a freelance artist. He holds the brush for his oil painting in his mouth.
