Manta Ray ( dt . " Manta ray ") is a song of songwriter J. Ralph . The song, written by J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty and sung by Hegarty, was released as a download on November 6, 2015 and was the first single from the soundtrack to the documentary Racing Extinction . The song is nominated for Best Song for the 2016 Academy Awards. This makes Antony Hegarty the second trans woman after Angela Morley to be nominated for an Oscar.

History of origin

Director Louie Psihoyos hired singer and songwriter J. Ralph for the soundtrack of the documentary Racing Extinction . J. Ralph collaborated with singer Sia on One Candle . For Manta Ray he was inspired by a video with a recording of the supposedly last song of a male scallop-throat moho. The male specimen wanted to attract a female that presumably no longer existed. When he saw the video clip with the now extinct bird species, he wanted to write an answer to this song. After writing the melody, he asked Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons if she would like to write lyrics for him and do the vocals. She finished writing the song within a few hours.

On August 1, 2015, various critically endangered animal species were projected onto one side of the Empire State Building . According to the New York Times, it was the first time that moving images were shown there. The promotion for the documentary was accompanied by the song One Candle by Sia and Manta Ray . The accompanying video by Sia was later used as a trailer for the film. A video for Manta Ray published on December 2, 2015 shows recordings of a magnified drop of seawater containing various types of plankton .
