S. Leigh Savidge

S. Leigh Savidge (* 1958 in Seattle , United States ) is an American film producer , director and writer who was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for his work on the script for the biopic Straight Outta Compton .

Life

Savidge comes from a family of car dealers known in Seattle that has been based there since the 1920s. His father was Samuel L. Savidge (1924–2013), his mother the former flight attendant Joan Harris (1928–2007). He (had) two siblings. He is correctly S. Leigh Savidge III. He attended the prestigious Lakeside School in Seattle and after graduating there began a communication course at Boston University . Then he moved to Los Angeles . In 1972 he drew attention to himself as executive producer of the musical crime drama The Harder They Come , in which the Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff played the lead role.

In 1986, in Santa Monica , a city in western Los Angeles County , California , Savidge founded the production and licensing company Xenon Pictures, which had ties to the writers of blaxploitation works such as Melvin Van Peebles and Rudy Ray Moore . In 1994 he produced the documentary The Legend of Dolemite , which is primarily about the blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore. This was followed by further work as a producer until 2000, dealing with Martin Luther King , Mahalia Jackson and again Rudy Ray Moore.

Savidge then brought out the documentary Welcome to Death Row in 2001 , which is about the rise and fall of the label Death Row Records , one of the musicians Dr. Dre and the music manager Suge Knight . In addition, he published a book on the subject. For the 2003 video documentary The Legend of Dolemite: Bigger & Badder , Savidge volunteered as executive producer. He also appeared in this role in the 2004 video documentation Eminem AKA . Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road to Glory is the name of a video film made in 2008 with his participation. In 2011, he joined the executive producer of the video documentary Biebermania! on.

For the 2016 Academy Awards , S. Leigh Savidge and Alan Wenkus received an Oscar nomination for the story of the biography Straight Outta Compton , which forms the basis for the script written by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff , and is nominated in the "Best Original Screenplay" category . Savidge also appeared as executive producer on this production, as well as in the 2015 documentary Straight Outta Death Row .
