occupation

The Harder They Come is a Jamaican film by director Perry Henzell from 1972 and is one of the so-called Midnight Movies . The film was based on the life of rude boy Vincent "Ivanhoe" Martin, alias Rhyging (1924–1948); the film plot is, however, set in the presence of the production time. The film is seen as one of the pioneers of reggae music for an international audience.

action

The Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff plays Ivanhoe Martin, a young man who comes from the country to the city of Kingston and dreams of a career as a singer. After various initial difficulties, he finally found a producer (who represented the majority of the Jamaican producers at the time). After the latter pays him very poorly, Ivan begins to earn his living trading marijuana , which is also illegal in Jamaica. Accordingly, he comes into conflict with the system, which makes life difficult for him - he is shot in a fight with the police .

music

The soundtrack for the film, which has also been released as an LP and now CD, contains six tracks by Jimmy Cliff, You Can Get It If You Really Want and The Harder They Come, each in two slightly different versions, as well as Many Rivers to Cross and Sitting in Limbo . David Scott is represented under his stage name Scotty with Draw Your Brakes . The Melodians sing their religious song Rivers of Babylon , which later became a world hit in the version of Boney M. The Jamaican vocal trio Toots & the Maytals contributed the songs Sweet and Dandy and Pressure Drop . 007 (Shanty Town) was already an international hit parade for Desmond Dekker in 1967 and The Slickers are represented by Johnny Too Bad .

Desmond Dekker was internationally successful with the song You Can Get It If You Really Want in 1970.

criticism

"The Harder They Come" by Perry Henzell. This first feature film production from Jamaica (which, however, was financed by Roger Corman ) tells the odyssey of the naive farm laborer Ivan through the slums of Kingston. Exploited by authoritarian priests, cynical record producers and marijuana dealers, he has become a celebrated underground folk hero after several police murders: an up-close, extremely realistic, milieu and development study, often shot with the means of American underground film and in the original sound, which unfortunately very is shown bogged down in independent cinemas.

The time of October 25, 1974

Trivia

  • Ivan's decision to take up arms is made after seeing the Spaghetti Western Django in a cinema . During the showdown with the police, Ivan remembers the scene in which Django shoots the bandits with his machine gun and imitates a duel scene known from Westerns.
