What If is a song recorded by English actress Kate Winslet . It was released as a single in November 2001 and used in the animated film A Christmas Tale, which is based on the classic novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens . Written and produced by Steve Mac , the ballad What If follows the theme of the film. The song is the first and only published musical work of the official film music .

The Daily Mirror reported that Winslet recorded the single to reach number one on the UK Christmas charts in 2001. However, the song only entered the charts at number 6 and was beaten by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman with their version of the song Somethin 'Stupid . What If rose to number 1 in the Irish charts on December 7, 2001, displacing the Irish television doll Dustin with his version of Sweet Caroline . It stayed there for another four weeks. The song also made it to number 1 in Austria and Belgium (Flanders). In Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands it was among the top 10. In 2002 it won the OGAE Song Contest ( French: Organization Générale des Amateurs de l 'Eurovision ).

On Winslet's request, the proceeds of the single to the NSPCC were ( eng : National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children ) and the Sargent Cancer Care for Children donated.

Despite the great success of her song, Winslet turned down another music career.

The accompanying music video, directed by Paul Donnellon and produced by Chris Horton, shows clips from the film as Winslet walks around an old Victorian house.

In 2004 Ronny V feat. Nanda released a dance version of the song. In 2008 Rhydian Roberts , the finalist of X Factor 2007, added his first album Rhydian with a duet with the American singer and Broadway actress Idina Menzel . Olivia Archbold, the 2010 semi-finalist on the talent show Britain's Got Talent , sang this song. Thanks to their performance, What If rose to number 76 on June 6, 2010 in the British singles hit list.
