Yevhen Shcherban

Yevhen Olexandrowytsch Schtscherban ( Ukrainian Євген Олександрович Щербань ; Russian Евгений Александрович Щербань * 18th January 1946 in Konstantinovka in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR , † 3. November 1996 in Donetsk ) was a Ukrainian businessman and politician. He was a member of the Liberalna Partiya Ukrayiny party and was elected to the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, in 1994.

Shcherban and his wife and two technicians were murdered on November 3, 1996 at Donetsk Airport by people disguised as police officers. Although eight perpetrators were sentenced to prison terms in 2003, the background to the murder was never fully clarified. In January 2013, the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office named the former Prime Minister Pavlo Lasarenko and the former Prime Minister and later opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko as the commissioner of the act. Tymoshenko and her defense attorney rejected the allegations as absurd and constructed, and they in turn accused the billionaire Rinat Akhmetov and President Viktor Yanukovych to have been involved in the Shcherban murder.
