The Long Dark is a first-person - open world - Survival -Adventure and was designed by hinterland Studio developed.

Bush pilot William Mackenzie is on a routine mail flight in the wilds of North America when mysterious lights flicker across the sky and his plane, a de Havilland Canada DHC-2 , rapidly loses performance. Mackenzie falls in the middle of a densely forested mountain landscape, but survives with minor injuries. Without orientation and means of communication and surrounded by wolves, he must ensure his survival and establish contact with civilization, gradually realizing that a global catastrophe has occurred.

Game principle and technology

The game offers both a sandbox mode and a story mode , in which three out of five announced episodes have already appeared.

Sandbox

In sandbox mode, the player starts at a random location in a region of his choice. The story takes place after a "geomagnetic storm", which is why the climate has changed and the game world is covered in snow. The player in the sandbox mode has no fixed goal, except to survive as long as possible, different levels of difficulty can be selected for this. The player has the opportunity to explore buildings in order to get food, equipment and warmer clothing or to produce objects. Wild animals make survival difficult, but can also serve as a source of food.

Story mode

In Wintermute story mode called the player a set story follows, during which he also applies to other people and can interact with them. This also begins with the plane crash in northern Canada, but tells more about the background. It is up to the player where he moves, how many tasks he solves and how he survives.

The first two of the five announced episodes were released on August 1, 2017. The third episode was released on October 22, 2019.

Production notes

The game was initially sponsored by the Canada Media Fund . A Kickstarter campaign was successfully launched in October 2013 to fund the game. The developers were previously employed at studios such as Relic Entertainment , BioWare , Riot Games and Volition . Hinterland Studio founder Raphael van Lierop was previously the producer for Dawn of War at Relic Entertainment .

On August 2, 2017, it was announced that, together with Resident Evil producer Jeremy Bolt, they were planning to release The Long Dark as a film in theaters.

reception

The innovative game concept, the dubbing voices of Jennifer Hale and David Hayter as well as the gameplay and the graphic concept were praised.
