Albertville is a city in Marshall County in the US state of Alabama and is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area . The incumbent mayor is Carl Pruett.

The Mueller Company, which is a manufacturer of fire hydrants, is based in Albertville, which is why Albertville is also called the Fire Hydrant Capital of the World . The AHS Aggie Marching Band, which took part in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the fourth time in New York City in November 2007 , is also based in Albertville.

Albertville is located about 90 km northeast of Birmingham , Alabama and about 70 km from Huntsville on US Highway 431 , which runs southeast to Columbus , Georgia ; Albertville has a total area of ​​67.5 km², of which 0.3 km² (= 0.38%) is water.

Albertville is located a few kilometers south of Guntersville Lake, which is approximately 28,000 hectares in size and 121 kilometers long .

history

The area was previously inhabited by Cherokee Indians before they were forcibly evicted into Oklahoma in the 1830s. The Creek lived near what is now the urban area. The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto is said to have been there during an expedition in 1540. Whites settled there in the 1850s. The settlement was named after Thomas A. Albert, who came from Georgia and was the mayor of the city until his death in 1876. During the Civil War (1861-1865) there was repeated fighting in the Albertville area. Albertville had a population of 1,544 in 1910 and 5,397 in 1950

In 2010 a cyclone caused major property damage.

Two structures in Albertville are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of December 7, 2019), the Albertville Depot and the US Post Office Albertville .

Demographics

At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Albertville was inhabited by 17,247 people. The population density was 256.6 people per km ². There were 7090 housing units at an average of 105.5 per km². The population was 86.15% White , 2.05% Black or African American , 0.31% Native American , 0.26% Asian , 0.10% Pacific Islanders . 9.78% said they belonged to other races and 1.35% mentioned two or more races. 16.08% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of the city were distributed to 6566 households out of which 32.7% were living in children under 18 years of age. 54.0% of the households are married, 11.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 29.7% did not form families. 25.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.2% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08 people.

The urban population was divided into 26.0% minors, 10.1% 18–24 year olds, 28.7% 25–44 year olds, 20.7% 45–64 year olds and 14.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 93.1 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.9 men.

The median household income was 31,893 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 38,508 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,076 compared to $ 30,275 for women. The per capita income in Albertville was $ 16,336. 16.7% of the population and 14.1% of all families had an income below the poverty line , including 21.8% of minors and 21.0% of those aged 65 and over.
