Alabaster is a city in Shelby County in the US state of Alabama , USA , 17 miles south of the city of Birmingham .
history
Alabaster is a relatively young city. In 1925, Joseph E. Walker opened the first retail store here. The first bank opened in 1952, and its president - George L. Scott, Jr. - became the city's first mayor. In 1958, construction began on Shelby County Hospital in Alabaster, which was completed in 1959. Today's town hall was built in 1960 and at that time housed the public library. The first shopping center was built in 1964.
Alabaster today
Today, alabaster is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. In the last 10 years alone, the city's population has grown by 63%. The average age of the residents is 33 years. Alabaster is very well connected by Interstate 65 and Interstate 459, so cities like Birmingham and Montgomery can be reached in less than an hour's drive.
The annual CityFest regularly draws thousands of visitors in the summer with live music and children's attractions, making it one of the largest public festivals in Shelby County . Alabaster's largest Christmas Parade takes place in Alabaster every year in early December. It is sponsored by the city's Beautification Association and has over 100 participating groups.
