Erwin Welke

Erwin Welke (born January 9, 1910 in Dortmund ; † May 28, 1989 in Lüdenscheid ) was a German SPD politician .

Life

After graduating from elementary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a heating fitter and worked in the profession he had learned.

He became a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth in 1923 , joined the SPD in 1928 and in 1929 became a member of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold .

After the National Socialists came to power, he was arrested in 1933. In 1935 he was arrested again and sentenced to five years in prison and five years of loss of honor for preparing for high treason. In 1942 he was drafted into probation unit 999 and in 1943 he was taken prisoner of war by the United States.

After the Second World War he became editor of the "Westfälische Rundschau" in 1946 .

Welke belonged to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from April 20, 1947 to June 17, 1950 , where he was first deputy in 1947 and chairman of the refugee committee from 1947 to 1950.

He was a member of the German Bundestag from its first election in 1949 to 1969. In 1949, 1961 and 1965 he won the direct mandate in the Altena - Lüdenscheid constituency and in 1953 and 1957 he entered parliament via the state list of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Stasi noted in 2013 that the Ministry of State Security of wilting since the mid-fifties to the end of his parliamentary membership involved a lot of information. "But whether Welke consciously worked for the GDR secret service or whether the HV A obtained the information from a legend cannot be clarified on the basis of the meager tradition."

Public offices

From March 22, 1946 until his resignation on December 22, 1971, Welke was a member of the Lüdenscheider Council without interruption. From 1964 to December 31, 1968, he was Lord Mayor of Lüdenscheid, and from January 1, 1969 to 1971, Mayor , due to the law on the reorganization of the Altena district and the independent city of Lüdenscheid .
