Theodor Siebs
Theodor Siebs (born August 26, 1862 in Bremen , † May 28, 1941 in Breslau ) was a German medievalist .
biography
Theodor Siebs studied philology at the universities of Tübingen and Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in 1885 . During his studies in 1881 he became a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity .
In 1888 he completed his habilitation at the University of Breslau . There he taught as a private lecturer , in 1890 he moved to the University of Greifswald . In 1894 he became an associate professor for German language and literature at the University of Breslau, and in 1902 a full professor . From 1903 to 1922 he headed the Academic Institute for Church Music there , and from 1929 to 1941 the department for dialect research . He retired in 1929, but continued teaching for a few years. From 1902 to 1939 he was chairman of the Silesian Folklore Society .
Siebs developed the first pronunciation dictionary for the German language, the German stage pronunciation , also known as "the Siebs" , with a commission of linguists and representatives of some German theater stages that he led . The work, first published in 1898, has long been decisive in regulating the pronunciation of German. Siebs is also considered the founder of modern hairdressing .
