Ömer Şükrü Asan (born May 28, 1961 in Trabzon ) is a Turkish folklorist , photographer and author .

Life

As a result of the protests of nationalist circles against the publication of his book Pontos Kültürü , a study of the language and culture of the Greek-speaking Muslims in his home village of Çoruk in the district of Of , the then National State Security Court in Istanbul issued a ban on the sale of the newly published edition on January 21, 2002 of the book. On June 10, charges were brought against Asan and his publisher Ragıp Zarakolu for separatist propaganda under Article 8 (1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act. After Article 8 of the Anti-Terrorism Act was abolished, Asan was acquitted in September 2003.

In addition to his books, Asan has published numerous articles in various newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune , Milliyet , Radikal and Sabah .
