Viktor Georgijewitsch Kulikow ( Russian Виктор Георгиевич Куликов ; born July 5, 1921 in Oryol Governorate , † May 28, 2013 in Moscow ) was a Soviet marshal and politician . He was commander in chief of the United Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact and Marshal of the Soviet Union .

Life

Kulikow comes from a poor farming family. He served in the army since 1939, attended the infantry school in Grozny in 1941 , became an officer and, during the German-Soviet War, was deployed as commander of tank units on the Baltic and Belarusian fronts . He attended a military school in 1947, the Frunze Military Academy in 1953 and the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1959 .

From May 1967 to 1969 he was the commander of the Kiev military district and from October 1969 to 1971 he was the commander of the Soviet Armed Forces Group in Germany . From September 1971 to 1977 he was Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces . From 1977 to 1989 he was the successor to Iwan Jakubowski , commander in chief of the United Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact. On January 14, 1977 he was awarded the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union, in 1983 the Lenin Prize .

Kulikov had been a member of parliament since 1989, first in the Soviet and then in the Russian parliament.
