Rosalie Varda (born May 28, 1958 in Paris ) is a French costume designer and film producer .

Rosalie Varda was born in Paris in 1958 after her parents, Agnès Varda (1928-2019), a filmmaker considered a key figure in modern cinema, and Antoine Bourseiller (1930-2013), a French comedian, divorced. She has three siblings. Her half-brother is the French director Mathieu Demy (* 1972), who came from her mother's second marriage to Jacques Demy (1931–1990), as well as the two half-siblings who emerged from her father's relationship with Chantal Darget (1934–1988), the actor Christophe Bourseiller (* 1957) de and bullfighter Marie Sara (* 1964).

Career

Varda had been in front of the camera early in her career in the film business. In 1964 she played the role of Françoise Cassard in the film drama The Umbrellas of Cherbourg , with her adoptive father Jacques Demy directing and writing the screenplay. At the age of 15 she starred again in a film by Jacques Demy and so she was seen in the comedy Die Maternity Pants . She had her last role in the film drama The one sings, the other not in the role of Marie, for which her mother wrote the script and worked as a director.

Then Rosalie Varda switched sides and devoted herself to costume design. She gained her first experience in 1979 with the historical film drama Lady Bird , before she was responsible for the costumes for the works Passion , Thieves of the Night , Hundred and One Night and Americano , among others . For the film Americano she was also responsible for the first time in the field of film production as a producer and supported her brother and mother. She gained international fame through her Oscar nomination in the category Best Documentary at the 2018 Academy Awards for the film Moments: Faces of a Journey Received. She was the producer, her mother directed with JR and they wrote the script together. The Oscar award went to Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan for their contribution Ikarus .
