Imperial Count Christian Renatus von Zinzendorf and Pottendorf (born September 19, 1727 in Herrnhut , † May 28, 1752 in London ) was a German hymn poet.

Life

Renatus von Zinzendorf was a son of Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and his wife Erdmuthe Dorothea, geb. Countess Reuss zu Ebersdorf . He received a pietistic upbringing and was sent to Jena to study theology in 1736, accompanied by Johann Nitschmann. There he lived with a group of awakened people close to the Moravian Brethren , who practiced a belittling mysticism of Christ. In 1739 Duke Wilhelm Heinrich had the Christian economy expelled from the country. Zinzendorf continued his training at the Herrnhaag Brothers Seminary and toured Livonia as his father's companion .

From 1744 Count Christel worked as his father's assistant and was appointed choirmaster for the unmarried brothers. In 1747 he moved from Marienborn Castle (near Eckartshausen in Hesse ) to Herrnhaag, and in 1748, before his father went on a trip, he was ordained into the office of elders for single brothers. During this time, Zinzendorf operated an excessive mystical cult around sweethearts , side caves , little hearts , fools and brides , so that his father recalled him in 1749 and forbade the community in a penal letter from non-biblical belittling cults. After discussions with his father, who saw him as his successor, Zinzendorf renounced his sentimental piety. In August 1750 he called a “covenant for the torture of God” into being and in this “consolation phase” prescribed by his father wrote numerous “purified” poems. He died of consumption in London on a trip to England .

Works

Zinzendorf is the author of several songs on the Passion of Christ, which have found their way into the Moravian hymn book from 1735, the London hymn book from 1753/54 and other Protestant hymn books.

  • On! you closely connected hearts of Jesus
  • Bloody sorrows of my own friend
  • We find each other here together
  • My lord was in dire straits for us
  • Torture of God, who can forget yours
