Werner Reutter (born February 5, 1937 in Hornberg ; † May 28, 2016 ) was a German physician and molecular biologist. He was a professor at the Institute for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Werner Reutter studied human medicine and physics at the Universities of Freiburg and Munich from 1956 to 1962 . He received his doctorate from 1960 to 1962 at the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Freiburg and passed the medical state examination in 1962. From 1962 to 1963 he was a medical assistant with Ludwig Heilmeyer at the Medical University Clinic Freiburg and in the Landshut District Hospital. In 1964 he received his doctorate and obtained his license to practice medicine. From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a research assistant at the Biochemical Institute of the University of Freiburg and from 1968 to 1972 he was a research assistant there . 1972 followed the habilitation and Venia legendi for the subject biochemistry and pathobiochemistry. From 1972 to 1977 he was senior assistant at the Biochemical Institute at the University of Freiburg. Then he was an adjunct professor there (AH 1).

In 1979 he became a full professor at the Institute for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin.

His main research interests include glycomics , especially research on sialic acids . Together with D. Keppler, R. Lesch and K. Decker, he discovered galactosamine hepatitis . He carried out studies on the key enzyme in sialic acid biosynthesis and examined the processes of membrane-localized glycoproteins. He contributed to the development of new glycosidated phospholipids that inhibit cell growth and studied galactose as a dietary supplement to inhibit Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia .

Reutter worked on a study in which the processes of the metabolism of galactose were examined. The study showed how the cytotoxic ammonia is broken down when it is converted into amino acids, as occurs in the brain . Since ammonia is particularly problematic in Alzheimer's disease, this process helps detoxify the cell. Studies by the nutritionist Andreas Hahn also indicated a possible effect of galactose on cognitive disorders.

Further research by Reutter will examine the effects of galactose on people with dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease, in more detail.

He has received several awards, including a. 2012 with the Rosalind Kornfeld Award .
