Glycomic
Glycomics , a term analogous to genomics and proteomics , describes the systematic investigation of all glycan structures of a cell type or an organism in biochemistry . It is part of glycobiology . In particular, modifications of proteins by attached carbohydrates ( glycosylation ) and their function and effects are investigated. Glykomik also includes the creation of novel biopharmaceutical protein-based bioactive ingredients .
The human genome harbors genes for at least 250 different glycosyltransferases . The majority of these are located in three enzyme families, each of which can cladistically be traced back to a parent form.
