Volker way
Volker Weise (born October 15, 1943 in Dresden ; † May 28, 2017 ) was a German journalist . From 1987 to 2009 he was editor-in-chief of the Bremen daily Weser-Kurier .
Life and work
Wise parents died early; his father died in World War II and his mother died of illness. Weise and his older sister Gudrun were raised by their grandparents in Berlin-Wedding . He studied law in Kiel ; afterwards he began a traineeship at the Bremer Nachrichten in Bremen from 1968 .
After completing his editorial traineeship, he began his professional career in 1969 as a junior editor for Bremer Nachrichten . In 1980 he was appointed head of politics at Bremer Nachrichten . In 1987 he was appointed to the editor-in-chief of Weser-Kurier , which, like Bremer Nachrichten, belongs to Bremer Tageszeitungen AG . Weise held this office for 21 years, making him one of the longest-serving editors-in-chief in Germany before he retired at the end of January 2009. In terms of technology and content, fundamental changes took place in the newspaper industry during this time. Way shaped the profile of the largest Bremer newspaper and made it with more than 500,000 daily readers to the farthest-reaching metropolitan newspaper in Germany. Together with the then editor-in-chief of Bremer Nachrichten , he founded the Sunday newspaper Kurier am Sonntag in 1983 and thus faced competition from advertising papers distributed free of charge . Most recently, he was responsible for the Weser-Kurier- Gesamtausgabe, published by Bremer Tageszeitungen AG, including Weser-Kurier , Bremer Nachrichten and Verdener Nachrichten , whose circulation, according to the publisher, was around 169,000 copies in the Bremen area in 2009.
Weise brought about several changes, such as the Weser-Kurier's turn to a so-called author's newspaper, supplementing current reports with background presentations and strengthening the newspaper's local and regional competence . He expanded the district -related reporting in Bremen with district couriers that appear twice a week . At an early stage, he introduced a news desk , which is now standard in all media companies, and provided several layout modernizations (so-called relaunches ) as well as permanent locations for the main sections of the newspaper . In addition, he opened the newspaper as a service provider for readers and introduced inserts (so-called supplements ) to deepen topics.
He commented on international, national and local events and from 2004 took over the weekly local column “Durchblick”, in which he often dealt critically with Bremen politicians . During his many years as editor-in-chief, he trained generations of volunteers .
Weise was critical of the right-wing extremist scene and advocated that the Weser-Kurier deal intensively with right-wing radicalism and neo-Nazis even without current events and that the editorial team reported extensively and continuously about it. On his initiative, the Bremer Tageszeitungen AG also published two brochures in which the most important texts of the editorial team on the subject of right-wing extremism were summarized.
Volker Weise was married to Cheryl Weise, an American , whose three children were taken into the family. He died after a long illness at the age of 73.
Honorary positions
Weise was chairman of the Bremen Community Foundation until November 2009 , which was set up in 2002 by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen as a foundation under civil law and was co-founded by him, and was committed to the participation of Bremen's citizens in the development of their city. He was also the founding chairman of the Weser-Kurier Christmas Aid, which has been supporting families in need in Bremen with donations at Christmas since 1998.
