The Day of border guards ( Russian День пограничника ) is a Russian holiday. It is celebrated every year on May 28th in honor of the border troops of Russia .

The holiday was re-established in 1994 by a decree of the Russian President "with the aim of rebirth of the historical traditions of Russia and its border forces." The holiday already existed for the border troops of the Soviet Union . The border guard of the Russian SFSR was created by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of May 28, 1918. At that time, the Headquarters of the Border Guard was established, into which the officers of the former administration of the Department of Border Guards of Russia were fully integrated. The legal successor to these structures, which were most recently subject to the KGB in the Soviet Union , was the Federal Border Guard Service of Russia, founded by decree of the Russian President on December 30, 1993.

Russia borders 14 countries (excluding maritime borders) (no other country except China has such a number of neighboring countries). Cross-border cooperation was established and secured in contractual documents with 32 foreign countries. The holiday itself is intended to indicate the fighting strength of this type of army and also to raise the fighting spirit of the soldiers who are doing their service for their homeland and their country.
