Jan Lebenstein (born January 5, 1930 in Brześć nad Bugiem , Poland , † May 28, 1999 in Krakow ) was a contemporary Polish painter .

life and work

Jan Lebenstein attended the Warsaw High School for Fine Arts from 1946 and studied from 1948 to 1954 at the Warsaw Academy for Fine Arts with Artur Nacht-Samborski (1898–1974). Lebenstein's painting comprised elements of surrealism and abstraction , as well as modern mannerism and fantasy . In October 1956 Jan Lebenstein had his first solo exhibition in the “ Teatr na Tarczynskiej ”, organized by the poet Miron Białoszewski .

In 1959 he moved to Paris , where he lived and worked until 1992. He exhibited at the 1st Paris Biennale that same year and won the Biennale Grand Prix . In 1959, Lebenstein was also a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in the painting department . In Paris he worked closely with the people around the monthly “ Kultura ”, which was directed by Jerzy Giedroyc . His political views left him in Paris until 1992. He only returned to his native Poland in 1992. In the same year, the Galeria Zachęta in Warsaw held a large retrospective of his art. In 1985 he had already been awarded the Jan Cybis Prize . Jan Lebenstein died in Krakow in 1999 at the age of 69 .
