Gerontius of Moscow

Gerontius ( Russian Геронтий ; † May 28, 1489 ) was the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Kolomna and Metropolitan of Moscow .

Life

In 1447 Gerontius became Archimandrite of the Simonov Monastery near Moscow and in 1453 he was ordained Bishop of Kolomna. After the death of Metropolitan Philip I, he was appointed Metropolitan of Moscow and Russia on June 29, 1473. At the end of the 1470s he got with Ivan III. among other things because of different views on the consecration process of the new churches in conflict. While standing at Ugra 1480, he spoke out in favor of resistance to the end against the Golden Hordes . He held a moderate position in dealing with the heresy that was spreading in Moscow and Novgorod . In 1482 Gerontius ended his office as metropolitan, but continued it later at the request of the Grand Duke .
