John Bergamo

John Bergamo (born May 28, 1940 in Englewood , New Jersey , † October 19, 2013 ) was an American drummer and composer .

Live and act

Bergamo attended the Lenox School of Jazz in Lenox Massachusetts in 1959 and studied at the Manhattan School of Music until 1962 . He was a student of Max Roach (drums), Percy Heath and Kenny Dorham (jazz) and Gunther Schuller , Marshall Stearns and George Russell ( music theory and history).

In 1962 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses ; he also attended summer courses in Tanglewood . In 1964 he joined the Creative Associates of the State University at Buffalo , a group of musicians led by Lukas Foss who dedicated themselves to the performance of avant-garde works of the 20th century and who, among others, the composers George Crumb , Sylvano Bussotti , Mauricio Kagel and Fred Myrow , the percussionist Jan Williams , the bassist Buell Neidlinger , the oboist and saxophonist Andrew N. White III , the singers Carol Plantamura , Sylvia Brigham Dimiziani and Larry Bogue , the trombonist Vinko Globokar , the violinist Paul Zukofsky , the clarinetist Sherman Friedlander , the Cellist Jay Humeston , pianist Michael Sahl , violist Jean Depuey and flautist Karl Kraber belonged to them.

Since the late 1960s he has also studied non-European percussion traditions: Indonesian with KRT Wasitodiningrat and I. Nyoman Wenten , African with Alfred and Kobla Ladzekpo and Indian with Ali Akbar Khan , Mahapurush Misra , Shankar Ghosh , Swapan Chaudhuri , TH Subashchandran , TH Vinayakram , T Rangnathan , Poovalur Srinivasan, and PS Venkatesan .

Since 1970 Bergamo has been the coordinator of the percussion program at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). In 1976 he founded the percussion group Repercussion Unit with Larry Stein , Ed Mann , James Hildebrandt , Greg Johnson , Paul Anceau and Steven Mosko , and in 1997 the percussion group Hands On'Semble with Andrew Grueschow , Randy Gloss and Austin Wrinkle . He worked with musicians such as John McLaughlin and Robert Shaw , with whom he toured the Soviet Union, and at times with Frank Zappa's Abnuceal's Emukka Orchestra .

In addition to a number of albums, Bergamo recorded several videos for percussion lessons, starred in film soundtracks, published articles in specialist magazines and composed works for percussion instruments.
