Shankar Ghosh

Pandit Shankar Ghosh (born October 10, 1935 in Calcutta ; † January 22, 2016 there ) was a well-known Indian tabla player who also emerged as a composer .

Live and act

From 1953 Ghosh received lessons from Gyan Prakash Ghosh in Calcutta, who was the first to play in tabla ensembles. Other teachers were Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Feroz Khan, Anath Nath Bose and Sudarshan Adhikari. With Ali Akbar Khan he has been on international tours several times since 1962. He has taught as visiting professor at McGill University and the University of Montreal . In 1968 he was a founding member of Ali Akbar College in California, where he taught until 1972. He can also be heard on George Harrison's 1968 album Wonderwall Music (where he was mistakenly listed as a sitar player).

Further tours with Ravi Shankar , Vilayat Khan , Nikhil Banerjee , Sharan Rani and VG Jog followed. Ghosh also performed with singers such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan , Omkarnath Thakur , Vinayakrao Patwardhan , Girija Devi and Akhtari Bai . He also worked with musicians such as John Handy , Greg Ellis , Pete Lockett and John Bergamo and also composed fusion and orchestral music. He teaches in Kolkata , Paris and Bonn .

Ghosh was married to the singer Sanjukta Ghosh and was the father of the tabla virtuoso Bickram Ghosh. In 1997 he and his son presented the album Drums of India: Father & Son .

Prizes and awards

Ghosh was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 1999-2000 from the Sangeet Natak Akademi , the highest recognition for musicians in India. He also received the ITC Sangeet Research Academy Award and the Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award .
