Jan Williams

Jan Williams (* 1939 in Utica ) is an American percussionist, conductor and music teacher.

Life

Williams was a student of percussionist Paul Price in the early 1960s . In 1964 he came to the newly founded Center of the Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo as a creative associate , of which he became co-director in 1974. From 1967 until his retirement he taught at the music faculty of the University at Buffalo , which he directed from 1980 to 1984. From 1985 to 1991 he was artistic director of the North American New Music Festival with Yvar Mikhashoff .

Williams has performed as a solo percussionist and conductor in the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Many new music composers wrote works for him, including Lukas Foss ( Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra ), John Cage , Elliott Carter , Joel Chadabe , Morton Feldman , Orlando Jacinto García , Gustavo Matamoros , Luis de Pablo , Frederic Rzewski , Nils Vigeland , Rocco Di Pietro ( overture for 100 percussionists) and Iannis Xenakis .
