Nils Vigeland

Nils Vigeland (* 1950 in Buffalo ) is an American composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Vigeland made his pianist debut in 1969 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Lukas Foss . He studied composition with Foss at Harvard College until 1972 , then piano with Yvar Mikhashoff and composition with Morton Feldman at the State University of New York at Buffalo .

He directed the Bowery Ensemble for eight years, with whom he premiered more than thirty works by contemporary composers such as John Cage , Jo Kondo , Pauline Oliveros and Dane Rudhyar in annual concert series at Cooper Union . With the percussionist Jan Williams and the flutist Eberhard Blum , he recorded compositions by Feldman that Feldman had dedicated to the ensemble.

With the orchestral work My Father's Song (premiered by the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra ) Vigeland won the Rose Price in 1989 . In 1992 he was commissioned by the English National Opera to compose the chamber opera False Love True Love (based on motifs from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre ), which premiered at the Almeida Theater in London.

Since 1984 Vigeland has taught composition and music theory at the Manhattan School of Music . In 2010 he was composer in residence at the Contemporay Past music festival , where the world premiere of his work Summer Harbor with Circle Dance took place.
