Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid (born May 28, 1737 in Unteröwisheim , † January 2, 1793 in Stuttgart ) was a German Protestant clergyman and university professor.

Life

Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid was the son of Friedrich Benjamin Schmid (born April 13, 1701 in Hemmingen , † May 23, 1769 Freudenstadt ), a deacon in Oberacker and Freudenstein; he still had nine siblings.

He was admitted to the monastery of Denkendorf in 1752 by the abbot Philipp Heinrich Weissensee (1673-1767) and went to the Maulbronn monastery in 1754 , then he enrolled on November 6, 1756 with a scholarship as a philosophy and theology student at the University of Tübingen and received in 1758 his philosophical master’s examination . 1761 doctorate he became Dr. theol. and went back to his hometown, where he worked for a year as vicar for his father in Unteröwisheim.

In 1762 he made a trip to Lausanne and met Prince Ludwig Eugen von Württemberg , who later became the ruling Duke of Württemberg . He recommended him, without his knowledge, to Duke Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf as court master for his two grandsons Wilhelm (1753–1774) and Peter (1755–1829), who later became Bishop of Lübeck and administrator of the Duchy of Holstein who should take a trip to Italy . Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid then received, without knowing the reason, from Colonel Carl Friedrich von Staal , who was in Strasbourg at the time, the request to accompany the princes on the journey and to give them a religious lecture alternately in German every Sunday and to hold French and to teach other sciences.

After a long stay in Italy, the princes were summoned to the court of the Russian empress in 1773 to attend the wedding of Grand Duke Paul I of Russia . The empress was so impressed by the education and knowledge of the two princes that they tried to keep Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid in Russia and offered him to become a councilor in the commercial college (equivalent to the chamber of commerce ) or to become her own reader; however, because he was striving for a modest way of life, he turned down the offer, but stayed in Petersburg for some time while the two princes sailed back to Kiel. During this return trip Wilhelm climbed the mast tree on July 14, 1774, but fell and hit his head on a cannon and fell into the water, the body was never found.

Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid, who had been appointed Hofrat in Holstein a year earlier , returned to the Duke of Württemberg in 1775 and traveled overland to do this, while his luggage was sent back by sea, which, however, was lost along with many valuable books in a shipwreck went.

After an absence of 13 years, he returned to his mother in 1775, who had meanwhile moved to Freudenstein; his father had died in the meantime.

During his stay he was asked by the government councilor Friedrich Casimir Medicus , whom he knew through the later abbot, Balthasar Sprenger , to give lectures on natural law , political science and finance as a professor for world wisdom and practical camera science at the High Camera School in Lautern hold so that he went to Lautern in 1775 ; In August 1784 he moved to Heidelberg with the camera school , which was renamed the Staatswirtschaftliche Hohe Schule there and was affiliated with the University of Heidelberg . He worked there as a professor of natural and international law, police, finance and state economics. On December 20, 1785 he was accepted into the Senate of Heidelberg University.

In February 1787, at his own request, he was appointed full professor at the Handels- u. Finance and at the same time appointed as a university preacher at the Hohe Karlsschule in Stuttgart; He also gave religious instruction to the younger students at the academy. During this time, his former pupil tried repeatedly to call him to Lübeck to accept the position of a real councilor, but he also turned down these offers.

Ludwig Benjamin Martin Schmid married Charlotta Juliana Luise, born on October 15, 1776. Engelbach (* 1753; † July 14, 1809 in Stuttgart); a son and two daughters result from the marriage:
