Balthasar Sprenger (theologian)

Balthasar Sprenger (born February 11, 1724 in Neckargröningen , † September 14, 1791 in Adelberg ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and agricultural scientist.

Life

Balthasar Sprenger attended school in Neckargröningen and was then an alumnus of the Blaubeuren and Bebenhausen monasteries . He studied theology and philosophy in Tübingen from 1743 to 1746 , received his master's degree in 1744 and was repetent in 1749 . In 1751 he was at Wilhelm Gottlieb Tafinger to Dr. phil. PhD. After study trips through Germany, Holland, England and France, he became a deacon in Göppingen in 1753 . In 1757 he was first appointed second professor and court preacher at the Protestant theological seminar of Maulbronn monastery and later in 1764 appointed first professor. In 1781 he became prelate and general superintendent in Adelberg, where he also worked as abbot in the Adelberg monastery from 1781 to 1791 . Sprenger was the ducal-Württemberg council with a seat and vote in the state parliament. In 1784 he became an agricultural assessor and in 1788 a member of the agricultural committee in Stuttgart .

Among other things, he was interested in agriculture and viticulture. Balthasar Sprenger has had a strong influence on the dawn of agriculture and viticulture in Württemberg and Germany through experiments and publications. His theoretical considerations were scientifically founded and backed up by practical experiments. In 1764, Sprenger was the first German to attempt the production of sparkling wine.

On April 20, 1771 he was elected a member (matriculation no. 760) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Dionysius Colophonius .
