history

Native Americans settled in today's Lakeport area several centuries ago . Around the middle of the 19th century, the place was occupied by western settlers . During the gold rush in California , many people came to the settlement, most of them were in transit. The first stores opened in the 1850s. With the end of the gold rush, many gold diggers settled permanently in the settlement. At that time, today's Lakeport was still named Forbestown after one of the city's first settlers, William Forbes, who came to the settlement in 1858. He first worked as the town's postal worker and then founded Forbestown's first business with James Parish , a forge that also sold wagons.

Forbestown was originally part of Napa County . With Napa County's borders changed, Forbestown was part of Lake County. Forbes traded 40 acres of his land for the city's county seat status . A courthouse and prison were built on this area on Main Street . A short time later, the name of the city was changed from Forbestown to Lakeport - to emphasize the importance of Clear Lake as a natural harbor .

In 1867, a large fire destroyed the courthouse and the county seat was relocated to Lower Lake . A few years later, Lakeport was regained county seat status. By 1888, Lakeport had grown into an important city with around 700 residents and 35 businesses. On April 30, 1888, Lakeport became a incorporated town . On March 17, 1952, Lakeport was then named a city .
