Faria , also known as Faria Beach is an unincorporated community  in Ventura County of  California . Faria runs parallel for 1.32 miles (2.12 km) with the California State Route 1 along the Pacific coast, 14.5 km northwest of Ventura between Ventura and Carpinteria . Faria is in the Ventura Unified School District and has its own  zip code .

geography

Faria is located on Pitas Point, a popular surfing destination known as Whistles. The rocky place faces south with a sandy beach.

Pitas Point and nearby Punta Gorda were formed during a large uplift caused by an earthquake . This area of the Rincón rose between 16 feet and 26 feet (~ 3 to 5 meters) above the surf when mechanically connected faults broke up at the same time. Scientists have examined the ancient stretches of coast and determined that exceptionally large earthquakes had struck the coast and the  Ventura Fault was caused by the simultaneous rupture of the interconnected fault. They also came to the conclusion that far more severe earthquakes can occur there than previously predicted.

history

In 1769  Gaspar de Portolà's expedition reached the northwest of the 26 km long  Ventura River . The Spanish explorers came across a small village near a watering hole in today's Padre Juan Canyon, which reaches the sea at Pitas Point, and camped there on August 15, 1769. The name of the canyon after "Father Juan" refers to the Franciscan missionary Fray Juan Crespí who was traveling on the expedition and noted that the natives "kept us awake and played on some sad pipes all night". So the point "Los Pitos" - Spanish for "The Pipes" was named. In a later American survey map of the coast, the place is recorded with the name "Las Pitas", which was the name of the century plant and the  Agave Americana  .

Supreme Court case

The granting of beach access from one of the houses was the 1987 case of Nollan v. The California Coastal Commission at the  Supreme Court of the United States .
