Topanga is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County . It's in the Santa Monica Mountains . The population is around 12,000, the area around 52 km². The area borders the Pacific to the south, Malibu to the west, and Pacific Palisades to the east . Topanga essentially consists of Topanga Canyon on Topanga Creek , which flows into Santa Monica Bay and is one of the few undammed rivers in the region.

history

The area was given the name Topanga by the Tongva Indian people, which means something about a place above . Topanga's first settlers were the Trujillo and Cheney families. They settled Topanga for the first time in 1839. In the 1960s, many celebrities moved to Topanga, such as Neil Young , who also had his album After the Gold Rush recorded there. On July 27, 1969, Bobby Beausoleil , a member of the Manson Family, killed Topanga music teacher Gary Hinman.

The built-up area is home to the Theatricum Botanicum theater company founded by Will Geer in 1973 .

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 8,289 inhabitants were distributed over 3,442 households. The population density was 167.2 inh / km². 84.5% of the population identified themselves as whites without Hispanic ancestry, 1.4% as African American , 6.4% as Hispanics or Latinos, and 4.3% as Asians or immigrants from the Pacific Islands.

In 2010, young people under the age of 18 lived in 28.9% of all households. 63.2% of the households were family households. The average household size was 2.41 people and the average family size was 2.87 people. 44% of the population were married.

20.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 4% were 18 to 24 years old, 23.1% were 25 to 44 years old, 38.5% were 45 to 64 years old and 14.1% were at least 65 years old old.

The per capita income was $ 62,434 and the median income per household was $ 115,518. 5.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
