The 2007 California wildfires were a series of eighteen wildfires in Southern California , which on October 20 in Malibu in the US state of California began and lasted 19 days. A total of 2800 km² were burned, more than 1500 houses and ten people were victims of the flames, more than seventy people were injured. The property damage amounted to more than a billion US dollars . Numerous sources of fire emerged in the course of this.

The reasons for the outbreak of the fires are varied. Some of the fires were caused by human influence. Some of the fires were caused by power lines that do not withstood the strain of the strong winds, and at least one fire was set . A fire was lit by an overturned articulated lorry and, in another case, state police shot and killed an arson suspect on the spot.

According to the authorities, around 900,000 people were forced to leave their homes by the fire. The evacuations were the largest in California history.

The reasons for the rapid spread of the forest fires were a prolonged period of drought in southern California, the warm weather and extremely strong Santa Ana winds that reached gusts of up to 140 km / h . Seven counties stretching from the Mexican border to north of Los Angeles were affected . About the counties of San Diego , Los Angeles , Ventura , Orange , San Bernardino , Santa Barbara and Riverside the imposed governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger the state of emergency , and the American President George W. Bush declared California a disaster area, making federal aid were released and by the Federal Emergency Management Agency has taken over the coordination of the relief efforts. At the height of the fires were more than 6,000 firefighters in use by units of the United States Armed Forces and the National Guard of the United States are supported.

Single fire

In total, 28 October were until Sunday, more than 2800 km 2 in flames that are almost two percent of the total area of California. Property damage amounted to more than $ 1 billion in San Diego County alone.

The two largest single fires were in San Diego County . The largest, the Witch Creek fire, burned a large area north and northeast of San Diego . The second largest, the Harris Fire, affected an area northwest of the Mexican border near San Diego. Authorities feared the fires would exceed the damage suffered by the 2003 Cedar Fire . which at the time burned 1134 km 2 of land and 2820 buildings and killed 15 people before it was contained on November 3, 2003. At the time, it was the largest fire in recorded California history.

The residents were subject, depending on the predicted spread of the fire, partly to mandatory and partly to voluntary evacuation . The residents were informed partly by loudspeaker trucks and partly by automated telephone calls.

After two days of the forest fires, a compulsory evacuation was ordered for around half a million people in at least 346,000 houses, making it one of the largest evacuations in the history of the region. The people were gathered at Qualcomm Stadium , among other places , but also in many schools, government agencies and churches in the region. The emergency shelters were operated by the American Red Cross.

Most of the public schools and universities in the San Diego area were closed, as were many businesses. To make sure the streets remained clear for emergency vehicles, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders urged residents to stay at home and inside.

On October 23, a number of evacuations were lifted, allowing around 50,000 residents of Del Mar , Chula Vista , and Poway and two parts of San Diego to return to their homes.

Several main streets were closed due to the fire and smoke. On October 22, Interstate 15 was closed between the junctions with California State Route 78 and California State Route 56 . On October 24th, the Horno fire forced Interstate 5 to be closed and Amtrak services between Oceanside and San Clemente to be suspended . Traffic was diverted from Interstate 5 to Interstate 15, which is now open again.

The four major fires in San Diego County burned on 21 October at nearly 1200 km 2 , and destroyed or damaged more than 1,350 homes and 100 businesses.

Witch Creek Fire

The Witch Creek fire was the largest single forest fire in Southern California in October 2007, causing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands, almost four years to the day after the Cedar Fire .

The fire originated in Witch Creek Canyon near Santa Ysabel and spread rapidly to Ramona , Rancho Bernardo , Poway and Escondido . Wind peaks of more than 160 km / h were reported from the vicinity of the San Pasqual Valley. From there, the fire jumped over Interstate 15 and continued west, where it caused significant damage to Lake Hodges, 4S Ranch , Del Dios, and Rancho Santa Fe .

Strong Santa Ana winds drove the fire west toward the coast. The San Diego County's sheriff feared the fire would be more momentous than the 2003 fire. While many coastal communities have been evacuated, changing winds kept the fire from directly endangering those areas.

All residents south of the Del Dios Highway, north of California State Route 56 , west of Interstate 15, and east of Interstate 5 have been advised to leave the area. On the evening of October 22nd, Del Mar City Council recommended that all residents evacuate. Evacuation was also ordered for Scripps Ranch and the Mesa Grande Indian Reservation was also evacuated because of the witch fire. The residents of the Barona Indian reservation were also advised to leave the area. At around 1:00 a.m. on October 23, a fire broke out near Wildcat Canyon south of the reserve. Many houses there were destroyed and several people were killed during the cedar fire in 2003. Wildcat Canyon and Muth Valley residents were told to leave their homes and the access road was closed. At 9:50 p.m., Julian's evacuation was also ordered. The power supply and the telephone network were out of order within the village due to the fire.

Harris fire

From its point of origin on Harris Ranch Road near Potrero, the Harris Fire developed in a northwesterly direction. On October 23, the fire reached the eastern area of Chula Vista . A number of communities were evacuated and the evacuees were placed in a nearby high school. A 52-year-old man was killed on his property in Potrero and four migrant workers were killed in the fire near the Mexican border . More than 1200 firefighters were involved in fighting this fire.

Northern Mexico near the city of Tecate was also affected by the Harris Fire , see Baja California .

Palomar Fire developed in the La Jolla Indian Reservation from a building fire and then spread to Palomar Mountain , where it combined with the Witch Fire and then to the Agua Tibia Wilderness . This was the last of the southern California forest fires that started in October that could be brought under control. The authorities only reported the containment of the fire on November 9th.
  • The Rice Canyon fire broke out in Rice Canyon near Fallbrook in the early morning of October 22nd . The path of the fire was initially westward, but on October 26th the wind turned and became onshore.

It caught fire at around 6:00 a.m. on October 21st from a drooping power line that had collapsed under the strong Santa Ana winds. The fire burned an area of 2.9 km 2 near Los Olivos . Around 2,000 residents and 800 houses were at risk before the fire could be contained on October 22nd around 5:00 p.m.

Baja California

Fires also burned in the northern parts of the Mexican state of Baja California . The Harris Fire burned near Tecate on October 22nd, and fires also burned near Tijuana .

The forest fires destroyed more than 15,000 hectares in the state of Baja California , particularly in the communities of Tijuana, Tecate and Ensenada . There were a total of seven individual fires in Baja California, with Maneadero in the highlands of Ensenada being hardest hit.

weather condition

Santa Ana wind speeds in m / s
( QuikSCAT illustration from 2002)

The forest fires occurred at the end of a dry summer and were aided by the seasonal Santa Ana winds . Wind speeds of up to 95 km / h and air temperatures of over 35 ° C created excellent conditions for the forest fires to develop and spread.

At Simi Valley on October 21 (left and center) and October 22, 2007 (right) in comparison

Southern California was in the middle of an unusual dry spell; in Los Angeles, for example, only 82 mm of precipitation fell from 2006 to the end of June 2007. It was the driest year on record. The combination of wind, heat and drought turned the undergrowth into fire accelerators. Authorities believe some of the fires created their own winds, similar to the 1991 Oakland Firestorm . The effects of the smoke could be felt as far as Brentwood (in the East Bay near Stockton), where they influenced the local weather.
