Nina Matthies (* 23. May 1953 in Manhattan Beach , California as Nina Grouwinkel ) is a former American volleyball - and beach volleyball player . She is the founder of the Women's Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA) and a long-time trainer in indoor and beach volleyball.

Career

At the age of 13, Matthies started playing volleyball indoors and on the beach. In 1971 and 1972 she played as an outside assailant at El Camino College in Torrance . During this time she was also in the squad of the US national team , with which she took part in the 1971 Pan-American Games in Cali , Colombia . In 1974 and 1975 she played for the UCLA Bruins , who won the US NCAA championship twice with her as captain .

In parallel to her indoor activities, Matthies has also played beach volleyball professionally since 1972. In her long active time until 1992, she won 44 national tournaments with various partners. She was most successful at the side of Linda Hanley , with whom she was victorious 30 times. In 1986, Matthies founded the Women's Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA), in which the rights of female beach volleyball professionals were better represented.

Matthies has also been active as a trainer since 1977. Until 1982 she was assistant coach at UCLA Bruins in the hall . From 1983 to 2013 she was the head coach at Pepperdine Waves . Since 2013 she has been training the beach volleyball players at Pepperdine University.

In 1994, Matthies was inducted into the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in California.

Private

Matthies lives in Malibu , California with her husband Dan . The two have two sons, Morgan and Marty.
